Glenwood Springs' student population is served by Roaring Fork's RE-1 School District which is comprised of two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Glenwood Springs also includes an alternative school within the city, Yampa Mountain High School; however, it is not a part of RE-1. For higher education, Colorado Mountain College in Spring Valley and Mesa State University in Grand Junction are approximately an hour away from Glenwood Springs.

In addition to boasting excellent schools, Glenwood Springs is a regional trade center and the seat of Garfield County. It supports a healthy mix of tourism, residential development and commercial variety. The town has an active parks department, which maintains a 40-acre, 14-facility network of developed parks as well as 4,000 acres of open space. The $10 million Community Center features a multitude of indoor activities to complement the recreational opportunities afforded by the area's abundant natural resources.

Named one of the 10 best small towns in America, Glenwood Springs offers true western hospitality and many reminders of its colorful Old West history. Originally called "Defiance," Glenwood Springs was founded in 1879 by James Landis, who was the first owner of the hot springs property. Isaac Cooper and his wife, Sarah, later renamed the town after their hometown of Glenwood, Iowa.

Glenwood Springs today is an appealing spot for tourists, residents, and the film industry, with the city having been featured in numerous Hollywood films. Exciting destinations include Vapor Caves, the Hot Springs Pool, Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park and Fairy Caves. Of course, the ruggedly beautiful Rockies provide plenty of opportunities for photographic tours, wildlife viewing and outdoor sporting adventures.
